Reflections on 23 Things!

I enjoyed learning about web 2.0 tools! They are very useful and practical for everyday use! My favorite tool we explored was Flickr and Google Docs! I think I took the most out of these things! I plan to continue using these tools until something better comes along!
I didn't expect to learn how to blog or to actually like blogging! I have signed up for GoogleReader which I use most every day. I really like creating blogs as a way to submit the 23 things! It sure beats writing a paper! I found signing up for so many accounts a little bothersome especially when they were not free.
As a teacher, this activity has had a huge impact on me! I had no idea online tools could be so useful! I plan to use a blog as a communication forum for parents and students. I also want students to learn to use these tools because they do make internet use easier!

Creative Commons is a great idea. It protects the author and the person who wants to share or use someone else's work. As a teacher, Creative Commons is great because sharing files electronically is being used more and more. I know if I create anything, I have protection. Ethics should be taught to students and using only items that are under shareable status is a great way to teach them that. An attribution can be found in the credits.

After creating my LiveBinder, I created Context clues, Adverbs, and Websites of Interest. I enjoyed creating these binders because I have been writing lessons for both of these topics for quite sometime! I have my websites binder to collect useful links. I have a folder on my computer that has links in it so I was able to transfer these into my Websites of Interest binder!
I think as a teacher, there are many binders created that are useful! Reading someone elses collection of tools is invaluable to any teacher.

Using Animoto was fun! It was fun to create and really fun to view! I was pleased with my end result! I wish the longer versions were free! In an educational setting, Animoto has it's place for sure. Allowing the students to use this tool would be beneficial and I think students would have love being able to keep the videos after the project. I am going to continue using Animoto to create videos for fun and for educational uses!

I have been using YouTube for years now and looking up videos is such an easy, fun, and time consuming hobby! I like YouTube because everything you could dream of seeing is at a fingertip's reach. The only downside to using YouTube in an educational setting, is the amount of bad material on the site. Many schools block YouTube so it's hard to list this as a good resource. I think YouTube has a lot to offer and I plan on incorporating it into my classroom whenever I can.
I chose my video because I love bunnies! I had two bunnies when I was younger and they both passed away. When I finally move into an apartment that allows pets, I am going to have a new pet bunny! For now, I just enjoy the cuteness of these two!

I am a member of TeacherPop and also BakeSpace! I love both of these social networking sites! I really didn't know other networks existed other than Facebook and Twitter! (And of course, the fallen Myspace!) Using social network sites are useful because they have a focus on just one aspect! I really love baking so I was thrilled to join BakeSpace! They have so many new and creative recipes I am just dying to try!
I think using teacher social networking sites are easy! I didn't know connecting with other educators could be so easy! Learning from others is a tool that I am always looking for and using social networking sites is a great way to do so!

Using social networks come naturally to me because I have been using them for quite some time. As a future educator, I need to be in touch with what my students are using and doing on the internet. I know I use Facebook as a large part of my communication. Before writing this blog, I discovered that Facebook has many educational pages to follow. Twitter has a larger selection of people and organizations to follow. For my classroom, I will use Twitter for a resource for me and my students. I like Facebook because I am so used to using it. Twitter has been new for me in the past few months but I really like using it. In my classroom, I will use Twitter for current research. As a teacher, I will need an easy access to resources that are brand new.

Tagging can be used in many ways. Just like Diigo, we tag things to make finding lots of material easier. As a teacher, finding loads of material in a snap is just what we need! Tagging is a great way to do that! Delicious.com is a great site for finding sites that have been tagged. I typed in multiple intelligences and found many great sites that I would use in my classroom or for academic projects. It was so easy and it gave me sources that I wouldn't come up in a Google search. Social bookmarking sites can be used in a classroom but mainly for teachers. I see myself using this site to find current sites and information in my own classroom.

I had never read about Wikis before this blog. I have heard of Wikipedia and used it many times. I had a negative concept of Wikis because my teachers always banned the use of Wikipedia (and for good reason.) I have discovered that Wikis are very useful in education. I viewed the Library Wiki and I read a number of great ideas! I love how all the great ideas to make libraries great are in one place!
I "played in the sandbox" and had a blast! I didn't upload anything but I plan to! This would be so great to have implemented throughout an entire grade. This way students in separate classes could communicate good ideas across the Wiki.

I chose iGoogle but only because I have already been using iGoogle for a few years! I love iGoogle because everything is customizable which is convienent. I know once I started college I wanted different widgets on my homepage and changing it was not a problem. I use Google for pretty much everything so I was thrilled to share my positive experience with it on my blog!
Again, I use Google Calendar all thee time! I am a proud and happy owner of an iPad 2 which links with Google products. I use GoogCal (which is what the app shows up like) and have my appointments and deadlines emailed to me. Using this is SO EASY and it makes scrap paper lists a thing of the past!
I have an app on my iPad that is called Reminders which is basically like a To Do list on my iPad. I really like using it so I doubt I would use an online tool. However, I did try out Remember the Mile and I liked how it broke down different categories. That's very helpful! I have signed up for an account so I will let you know if I end up using it!
I would recommend Google Calendar the most. The best part is the reminder email! It automatically sends and that keeps you from having to constantly sign in and check for deadlines. I love my Google account! Use Google!!!

I have been using mind maps and flow charts in my educational career as a student for quite some time. When I begin a project, I always have many ideas that need to be organized. I am a visual learner so seeing my ideas mapped out in an organized fashion really helps me. I used to write them down in a spiral notebook, but not anymore!!
I explored Gliffy and Bubbl.us and I really liked both of these. Sometimes I find creating documents on the computer a bit frustrating because you have to try really hard for the document to look exactly the way you want it to. I found that Bubbl.us was so simple to organize thoughts! The bubble features took a lot of text and was very straight forward when it came to adding a new bubble! Gliffy was just as easy to use but I prefer using Bubbl.us because I like mind mapping a bit better than flow charts. I am definitely going to use these in my future classrooms. Mind maps and flow charts are excellent ways to cater to students who are visual learners!

I really enjoyed using Zoho. When I had to do my website of the day earlier in the semester, this site was almost the one I chose. I didn't end up choosing this one because it was down for reconstruction. Anyway, I really like how the set up is almost identical to Microsoft Word. All the features are easily accessed. Google Docs is amazing too. I have been using Google Docs for a few months now because I have access to it on my i-Pad.
This is my drawing I made using Google Docs.
I prefer using Google Docs only because I have more access to it. I would use Zoho on my i-Pad if it was convenient. I like using Zoho because of how similar it is to Microsoft Word. I would use Google Docs to encourage my students to work in groups by showing them the collaboration feature on this. This will allow for my students to be able to share their work without obsessive emailing. Also, students can create their work at home and still be able to access it easily at school.

Google: A noun and a verb! I love Google! The tools are free and so easy to use. I have been using an i-Google homepage for about a year now, and I would feel lost without it. I have weather information, my email, and some fun games (gadgets) on my page. I enjoy using iGoogle, and I think in a classroom setting. iGoogle would be ideal for teachers to use. It is customizable so you can make it your own. http://www.google.com/ig?hl=
I also chose to set up a Google Calendar account. I absolutely love it and will continue using it. I have added new personal appointments and school appointments as well. As a teacher, the sharing feature would be the more beneficial. It would make event planning easy. Meetings will never be forgotten! I love Google Calendar!

I used the award winning blogs to thumb through instead of just using Google to find any blog there is. I am very interested in literature so I looked up a few blogs dealing with that topic. I found a great one. http://blog.schoollibraryjournal.com/heavymedal/2011/10/03/good-mocking/
I think Syndic8.com was the most confusing. They style of the website was much older than what I am used to. I used the predetermined bundles in Google Reader which was actually very useful. I found some new blogs that I am going to enjoy reading.
